Things I Have Learnt Whilst Being in Lockdown

Updated: Nov 27, 2022

Written by Tyler Nicholas

Lockdown was one hell of a crazy ride! The whirlwind of emotions, the inability to visit our family and friends and the constant bickering between our partners, was a result of the loss of freedom we experienced due to the lockdown restrictions.

For many people, they have breathed a sigh of relief since coming out of lockdown, as they can once again continue their joyous pleasures without being contained to their houses and finally get back to the normality of one's day to day social life.

Lockdown for some people however, was not completely pessimistic. In fact, the pandemic was one of the biggest eye openers for me which is why I would like to share 5 things that I learnt from what seemed like a never-ending experience of anxiety.

  1. Appreciate Your family.

People such as George More, Maya Angelou and Princess Diana heavily emphasised the importance of family being the centrefold in our lives. Lockdown has taught me to appreciate loved ones even more because they are all we have! Whether you are sending a card with some flowers to your parents, playing 'Monopoly' with your siblings or even having a quick phone call with your grandma, gestures are essential to show them that they are the most special people in your life. Treasure them while they're still on this Earth.

2. Putting God first.

Making God the most important factor in your life is crucial to your purpose! God has control over every aspect of our lives so, we should look to him for guidance and trust in him before anything else because he is continuing to watch over us, keep us safe and healthy during this pandemic.

3. Be resourceful with your time.

Like American author, Lemony Snicket once said: "early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise". In other words, time is a valuable part of one's success and is not wasted on the lazy. Start the day with a positive mindset and you will see that your work ethic increases. Whether you're working, studying or starting up a new business, strive to be the best version of yourself in order to get closer to your goals.

4. You are what you eat.

Consuming a lot of junk food is not just bad for our health but our diet can contribute to a negative mindset. Victor Lindlah once said: “you are what you eat”, meaning that overtime we become those same foods that are slowly destroying our bodies. Now, there is nothing wrong with treating ourselves once in a while, but we should treat our bodies as our temples by consuming healthier foods more often as they automatically improve our brain development. Not to mention, drinking two litres of water a day keeps us fit and energised.

5. Friends come and go.

Not everybody is meant to be in our lives forever and, there's a reason for that. There are so many amazing people in the world to have friendships with (seven and a half billion). It's just a matter of waiting for the right people to come along but appreciating the ones that you have and being true to yourself is vital to live a peaceful life.
